Jehovah Tsidkenu - The LORD our Righteousness
“The days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will raise up to David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. This is the name by which he will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness.” Jeremiah 23:5-6
Jeremiah is giving this name to the Messiah. Righteousness is defined as the quality, state, and characteristic of being right. We learn about this characteristic of the Messiah in the gospels where Jesus teaches of God’s nature as moral perfection and his readiness to save sinners.
Jesus said in Matthew 6:33 “Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you.” In Mark 2:17 Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
When we seek his righteousness we are living out our trust and faith in Him. Let us take action with our faith for it is the “evidence of things not seen” Hebrews 11:1. Romans 3:10 says “ there is no one righteous, not even one”. Girls, we are constantly surrounded by trials and temptations every day, at every turn, and we need to be able to stand firm through our faith and keep our eyes on Him so that His righteousness will prevail through us. All we have to do is say His name and all guilt and shame fall away. Jesus is our righteousness. He is our salvation.
Do you need a pardon? Come, come to the Lord our Righteousness and find release from captivity, freedom from duress, liberty from slavery, and exemption of sins. He wants to heal our wounds, bind up the broken-hearted, give us rest in Him, and wash us white as snow. He wants to give you beauty for ashes.
As we are in the season of Advent, celebrating the birth of the Messiah, we remember that his birth is the Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in our lives. He is the Lord our Righteousness!
